Jonathan Gee

Since being voted Guardian/Wire British Jazz Awards “Most Promising Newcomer” in 1991, Jonathan Gee has led a series of award-winning trios. Firstly, in the UK with Steve Rose and Winston Clifford, then in Italy with Danilo Gallo and Allesandro Minetto, and currently in New York with Joseph Lepore on bass and Nasheet Waits/Rob Garcia on drums, and in London with Larry Bartley and Ernesto Simpson. Jonathan has worked with many of the country’s leading jazz musicians, including Steve Williamson and Tim Whitehead, vocalists Christine Tobin and Cleveland Watkiss, and poet Lemn Sissay. From the USA he has appeared with Pharoah Sanders, David Murray, Benny Golson, Jean Toussaint, Art Farmer, Mark Murphy, James Spaulding and Ted Curson. He has performed around the world including in Azerbaijan, Israel, Cameroon, Singapore and China. In Italy he has toured and recorded with Danilo Gallo and Alessandro Minetto as GeeGalloMinetto and in France he has worked with the Didier Conchon/Ramon Layzelles Quintet featuring Wayne Dockery on bass and Antoine Banville on drums. In Finland his trio has been resident annually at the Helsinki Jazz Festival and he has also enjoyed a long-term collaboration with trumpeter/producer Mika Myllari. Their Northern Star People project album, View from the Pocket, was launched at the 2008 London Jazz Festival. Jonathan has recorded 8 albums: three trio with Rose and Clifford; one trio with Gallo and Minetto; one trio with Lepore and Waits; a solo vocal album; an electronic album with Northern Star People; and a quartet album with Damon Brown.
